Once Upon A Mattress Synopsis: This is the REAL story of the princess and the pea. The show is set in the Medieval period in a lovely little kingdom somewhere. The show begins with the Minstrel telling the audience they are about to see what really happened with the princess and the pea story. Due to a horrible curse on King Sextimus that has left him unable to speak, the kingdom has been run by his overbearing wife Queen Aggravain. She is so overbearing that she will not let any princess marry her prince son, Dauntless, without passing unpassable tests. The really bad news is that NO ONE can marry without the prince being married. One of the Queen’s ladies-in-waiting (Larken) has a tough time with this as she is expecting and it doesn’t look good! So, Sir Harry runs off to find a princess. He comes back with one – Winnifred who is, well, not exactly the most dainty thing…Dauntless and everyone else falls for her though so mommy has to get rid of her with an impossible test – a test of sensitivity…can she feel one pea under 20 mattresses?
